The drinks : the lawful and the forbidden
All drinkable liquids are lawful by nature, like foods. Nevertheless, religion has explicitly forbidden certain drinks.
“It is He who created for you all that is on the earth […].”
Surah 2 · The Cow (Al-Baqarah) · verse 291. Forbidden drinks
- Wine
God says: “O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, stone altars and divining arrows are but defilement, the work of Satan. So avoid it, that you may be successful.”
Surah 5, Al-Ma'idah, verse 90 - Any intoxicating and alcoholic drink
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every intoxicant is wine, and every kind of wine is forbidden.”
Hadith narrated by Muslim (no. 2003), on the authority of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) - A mixture of ripe and unripe dates, or of raisins and dates
Soaked in water until it becomes a sweet syrup, whether alcoholic or not: this kind of drink quickly becomes alcoholic. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not soak ripe dates and unripe dates together, nor raisins and ripe dates. Soak each kind separately.”
Hadith narrated by al-Bukhari (no. 5602, on the authority of Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him)) and Muslim (no. 1986, on the authority of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with them both)) - The urine of animals whose meat is unlawful
It is impure: religion forbids it.
“Allah cursed wine, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who sells it and the one who buys it, the one who presses it and the one for whom it is pressed, the one who carries it, and the one who ordered it and takes its price.”
Hadith narrated by Abu Dawud (no. 3674) on the authority of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and by Ibn Majah (no. 3380)2. Tolerated in case of necessity
To save one's life, a person choking on a morsel may use wine to clear it, in the absence of a lawful drink. Likewise, a person who is thirsty and fears for their life may drink a forbidden drink.
“And why should you not eat of that over which the name of Allah has been mentioned, while He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, except for what you are compelled to? […]”
Surah 6 · The Cattle (Al-An'am) · verse 1193. Other forbidden products
- Everything harmful to health
Such as harmful gases: religion forbids everything that is a source of harm.
- Everything that is smoked
Such as tobacco, hookah or hashish: some are harmful to the body, others intoxicating.
