What the Quran says
The verses that establish what is lawful and forbidden in food, and the rules of sacrifice. English translations, original Arabic text.
Eat of what is lawful and pure
“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and good, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”
“This day all good foods have been made lawful for you.”
“Eat of the good things We have provided for you, and do not be ungrateful.”
“O messengers, eat from the good foods and do righteous deeds.”
“He makes lawful for them the good things and makes unlawful for them the bad things.”
“They ask you what has been made lawful for them. Say: ‘Lawful for you are the good foods, and what the hunting animals you have trained catch, teaching them from what Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you and mention the name of Allah upon it. And fear Allah…’”
What is forbidden to you
“Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that over which a name other than Allah has been invoked, and the animal killed by strangling, by a violent blow, by a fall, or by goring, and that which a wild animal has eaten, except what you slaughter [before its death]. (Also forbidden is the animal) sacrificed on stone altars […].”
“There is no creature on the earth, nor bird that flies with its wings, except that they are communities like you. […]”
The animal, sacrifice and gratitude
“And the cattle He has created for you; in them is warmth and other benefits, and from them you eat. And for you in them is beauty when you bring them in at evening and when you send them out to pasture. And they carry your loads to a land you could not have reached except with difficulty. Indeed, your Lord is Kind and Merciful.”
“And the camels and cattle We have appointed for you as among the symbols of Allah; for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, eat from them and feed the needy who do not ask and the needy who ask. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful. Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus has He subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that to which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.”
“‘My Lord, grant me [a child] from among the righteous.’ So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy (Ishmael). And when he reached the age to work with him, [Abraham] said: ‘O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you, so see what you think.’ He said: ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.’ And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, We called to him: ‘O Abraham, you have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.”
“And complete the Hajj and 'umrah for Allah. But if you are prevented, then [offer] a sacrifice that is easy for you. And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its place of slaughter. […]”
“So pray to your Lord and sacrifice.”
“[…] as an offering to be delivered to the Ka'bah […].”
